Know the duty

A useful pump discussion begins with the liquid and the required operating conditions. Describe the process, the expected flow and how the demand changes. Include the operating environment and the existing installation so the supplier can assess the complete application.

Look at the pattern

A single operating observation may not represent a system that changes throughout the day. KSB describes using a measured load profile to inform efficiency and availability recommendations. Monitoring information can help make that discussion more specific; it does not remove the need to understand the process.

Make proposals comparable

Give competing suppliers the same description of the duty and ask them to state the assumptions behind their selection. Discuss the pump, drive, controls and service requirements together. Review any proposed speed control against the actual system. The photograph is an example of a hydronic pump installation, rather than a recommendation for a particular process.
