Describe the movement

Define the load, travel, positioning needs and operating pattern before comparing drive technologies. Also consider the space available and how the motion fits into the rest of the machine. A simple application description makes discussions with component suppliers more productive.

Include the utilities

An electric drive and a pneumatic actuator rely on different supporting systems. Comparing them fairly means considering the complete application, including the generation and preparation of compressed air where relevant. A universal claim that one technology is always better leaves out the task being performed.

Check the comparison

Ask what operating assumptions sit behind any proposed solution. Review positioning, force and dynamic requirements with the supplier, then consider integration and maintenance. The Festo white paper presents a comparison framework. The photograph shows induction motors and is a general electrical-equipment reference, not a picture of the actuators compared in that document.
